Delivering an Amazing Wedding Speech
Always start your speech with a startling statement or question
This is the best way to engage your audience to draw their attention in. Never start by stating how nervous you or anxious you are. Do not tell the audience that you are not the best speaker. They already want to hear what you have to say, so do the bride, groom, and yourself a favor and just be yourself.
2. Keep it short and to the point
There is nothing worse than that person that takes more than 15 minutes to deliver the speech. In the beginning of your speech you have everyone’s attention, but you only have for 5-10 minutes at most.
3. Pick Three points To Illustrate About the bride and groom
This point is in sync with the last point. Keep your speech short where you pick three points to illustrate about the bride and groom with a short anecdote for each point to make your speech interesting. The problem with picking more is that you risk making the speech last longer than 10 minutes which is a definite red flag. These points will not only help to clarify your message; however, they will help you to stay on track during the speech so you do not ramble.
4. Do not drink before the speech
This is one point that we cannot emphasize enough. You do not want to be that person that gets so drunk that you ramble and have difficulty making your point during your speech. Just as you do not want to be that person that the audience has to applaud off the stage because you are going on and on. There is nothing wrong with drinking but keep it to after your speech, so the bride and groom can have some memorable words that you share with them captured by the wedding photographer and the wedding cinematographer.
5. Do not embarrass the bride or groom
It is a common occurrence to bring up a funny embarrassing moment about the bride and the groom; however, we recommend to not embarrass the bride and the groom. We recommend finding some uplifting and generous things to say about the bride and groom. Everybody will be looking at the bride and groom as well as you. Allow the bride and the groom to save face by not mentioning anything embarrassing on their wedding day.
6. Rehearse, rehearse, and rehearse.
Your wedding speech should only be 5-10 minutes max. Make sure to write down the three points you want to make about the bride and the groom as well as the anecdote you want to talk about for each point. After you write it down spend a couple minutes each day practicing what you plan to say so that on the day of the wedding you are well versed and can give the delivery of your life. It does not have to be so amazing and spectacular it just has to be something that the bride and groom as well as the friends and family present will remember. You can literally spend 8 minutes a day practicing two weeks before and you will deliver it like a pro.
7. Record yourself to see how you sound
Another way to ensure the best quality speech for the bride and groom is to record what you are going to say so that you can hear yourself through the lens of the bride, groom, and the audiences. Hearing yourself allows you to make the changes necessary to your speech to fine tune it to be the perfect present for the bride and groom to cause tears to roll down their cheeks.
8. Be yourself
The bride and the groom asked you to give a speech because you are important to them. They want to hear what you have to say, so you should be yourself and just shine like a star. The bride and groom do not want the perfect speech they want to hear what you have to say. They want your quirkiness, your silliness, or whatever personality type you are.
9. Address the audience as you speak
As you speak do not just address the bride and groom you should also address the audience. The audience will feel more involved and more interested in what you have to say. Every so often talk to the mother of the groom or the father. This helps to keep everything interesting.
